The last we heard of Taika Waititi’s live-action adaptation of the hit anime classic Akira, the news did not sit well with fans. While the project was not outright cancelled. It simply took the back seat due to Taika’s return to the Thor franchise. As he is slated to write and direct the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.
Taika Waititi recently sat down with IGN and spoke about his now delayed project. He reveals that the film is indeed happening and that production would start up once he is done with Thor: Love and Thunder. Seeing how Taika just recently finished the draft of the script. Thus revealing that creative decisions are still being debated between him and Marvel Studios. Additionally, Thor: Love and Thunder is slated to release November 5, 2021, putting Akira on hold for quite some time.
Akira was initially slated to release May 21, 2021.
