Daredevil #31: Lock Down Part 1 (Review)

Matt continues serving his sentence while having a target on his head. Daredevil continues to look after Hell’s Kitchen, but they too have a target on their head.

For those who do not know, Matt Murdock is in jail for murder. He was inadvertently was responsible for a civilian’s death. Under the mask, the original Daredevil allows himself to be a prisoner. He is doing this to put the city’s trust back into vigilantes. In the meantime, Elektra has taken over for the “Man without Fear”. Matt also has a twin brother masquerading as Daredevil’s alter ego. His name is Mike. Without further ado, let’s see what is going on with these characters.

Matt is recovering from a fight he had with his fellow inmates. He plans on staying low as he heals. Also, he realized that the Warden put a bounty on his head. Two inmates try to get him to play cards, but he declines. One of the inmates, Marcus is looking out for Matt. However, Matt just brushes his concern off. The two argue, even referencing the events of King in Black.

This is where Matt had a symbiote and overcame its power. Matt is soon taken away by an officer. Meanwhile, Elektra is looking after a kid named Alice. The kid was recused by the new Daredevil after she killed a member a The Hand. Elektra attempts to have a sparring match with her, but Alice is too angry and traumatized. She leaves and Elektra is not happy.

Mike then gets kidnapped by Hammerhead, with the mob boss thinking that he is Matt. He informs the Hammerhead and his team that the D.A. is looking to take them down. He even brings up Izzy Libris, another boss who is in trouble too. Hammerhead is enraged and grabs Mike. The villain then storms off, after throwing down Matt’s brother.

Elektra is suited up and kicking butts. She is going through the city with one goal. That goal is to find Izzy Libris. She is pretty much the new Kingpin. Speaking of Kingpin, Mayor Wilson Fisk assaults one of his employees. The reason being is he wants Bullseye apprehended soon. Two cops attempt to shot the mayor. Yet, they are stopped by a woman wielding knives near their throats. With the hunt of the “World’s Greatest Assassin”, we find that he killed a man and a woman. He did this because the pair made a gun for him, but he missed his target. While talking to himself, he is approached by an angel.

Inmate Daredevil has a meeting with the Warden. He cuts to the chase, confronting him about the bounty. The cops then threaten Matt, but he takes them out. He even breaks the Warden’s panic button. Matt claim tells the Warden that he is on to him. He will not stop until the Warden is punished. Matt is then taken away, smiling, knowing that he is going to stop him.

Elektra then confronts the new Kingpin. She reveals that she worked with the group to resurrect her dead son. She regrets bringing her sons in this and wants to stop them. The pair make a deal to take them down. However, if Izzy deceives Daredevil, then she will kill her living son. Izzy then reveals that Fisk hired someone to take out the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. Turns out the individual was Bullseye. We then see the villain sniping civilians below. Laughs at the fact that he can kill over million people from above. The issue ends with Bullseye committing the crimes.

Chip Zdarsky did a very good job with the writing. See Matt embracing his devilish ways was badass. This showed that even though he’s in jail, Matt will forever be the Daredevil. Adding even more meaning to the character, Eletrka and Mike being involved helped too. We continue seeing the good Matt would do as a lawyer. We also see the good and ugly he does as the city’s hero. Also, I love the transitions that took place in the story. Elektra beating up someone to find Izzy and Fisk doing the same to find Bullseye. Finally, the fact that both Daredevils are being hunted down is insane. No one is catching a break!

The team of Mike Hawthorne, Adriano Di Benedetto, and Marcio Menyz all did a good job. Details always matter and they have that on full display. From the transitions to both one-shots of Bullseye, I was in love with the illustrations. The trio did nothing, but leave a good impression with their work. Also, this issue paid tribute to two men in the comic book industry. Color Artist, Matthew Wilson is given his own panel with facts about him.

As for the other, we have John Paul Leon. Leon passed away in May from Colon Cancer at 49. He is survived by his wife, daughter, and brother. He was responsible for Marvel’s Earth-X artwork, alongside Alex Ross. He also worked on art for the first two installments of Nolan’s Batman trilogy (2005-2012), Green Lantern (2011), and Superman Returns (2006). The Nerdy Basement would like to send our condolences to the artist’s family, friends, and fans. Thank you, J.P. for your work. Both you and your work will never be forgotten.
