Amazing Fantasy #4 Review The Nerdy Basement

Amazing Fantasy #4 (Review)

Steve Rogers, Peter Parker, and Natasha Romanoff are enemies! Yet, the group finds themselves allying themselves against a common enemy. Spoilers ahead for Marvel Comics’ “Amazing Fantasy #4”

The three previously mentioned heroes and Storm have been killed. These were younger versions of the fallen Avengers. After their deaths, they were transported to a mysterious island. The first three heroes allied themselves with different tribes and went to war with one another. Black Widow was with King Ren, one of the story’s main villains. Captain America was with a young man named America and his people. Peter was reunited with his late Uncle Ben, who wanted to be with May once more. However, all three would face loss once more. Even going head-to-head with each other. Due to King Ren’s actions, they have put aside their differences to form a faction. Let’s see what happens in this story.

Uncle Ben and Death make their way to a cell. They see Steve Rogers, surrounded by dead bodies, and take his shield. Rogers holds the body of a young boy. This child was America. Natasha then taunts the soldier by saying he didn’t earn his life. Next, Natasha finds herself being called a traitor by her fellow Red Room comrade, Daria. After Cap announces America’s death, an undead prison laughs.

Ren, Ben, and Death conversate about Ren’s father and their empire. As they talk, Steve finds himself face-to-face with an undead America. The trio then goes to the cell to free the undead prisoners for his army. Later, Ren and Ben greet Baron. This being promises Ren power, but only if he can oversee his kingdom. Ren then has Baron attacked by the undead army, with a stunned Ben confronting him. Suddenly, Ren stabs Ben, allowing him to be with May. Before ascending, he meets up with Peter again. He tells him to avoid anger and resentment. He wants Peter to hold on to something else.

After mourning the loss of Ben, again, Peter prepares for battle. He is given a new mask, a sword, and a shield to fight the undead army. He makes his way to the cell to free Steve, Natasha, and Daria. He is recruiting them to fight against Ren and his forces. Despite Natasha’s hesitance, she joins the makeshift Avengers. Of course, the Star-Spangled Man with the Plan is leading the charge.

Finally, we see Ren speaking with Death. Ren uses Cap’s shield to charge a device. This contraption is used to resurrect Storm. As the Avengers go to fight, Peter’s senses tingle. A rumbling follows with Steve believing that there’s an earthquake. He isn’t entirely wrong as the thunderous clap causes panic.

Kaare Andrews pulls double duty. Andrews wrote and co-illustrated the issue. Their work was not disappointing. We saw an emotional Captain America mourning America. If that isn’t good symbolism, I don’t know what is! Also, Uncle Ben’s role in the story was interesting. A man who was wrong the first time in life getting a second chance. Ultimately, he fails, but succeeds in inspiring his nephew, once again. This version of Natasha was great too! She was annoying, but the way she acted made sense.

As for the art, Andrews paired with Brain Reber really well! It was unique and beautiful to see this type of art style. This is especially true for this type of story. I loved the look of a broken Captain America. The first pages are something that will start your interest in the issue. Also, the one-shots were great too! Spider-Man wielding a sword and shield was awesome! The design for the shield was awesome too! Storms resurrection! However, the panel of the Amazing Fantasy Avengers was spectacular! Nothing short of details and beauty.
