Avengers: Mech Strike #1 (Review)

What kind of threat is the Avengers dealing with this time? Also, the team is getting the job done in the own individual mech suits?!

The likes of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Spider-Man, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, and Black Panther suit up for their battle. Well, Thor is drinking but is still prepared to fight. They are battling with a biological and technological creature called the “Biomechanoids”. This is a multi-headed beast resembling a dinosaur. As Carol, Tony, and Thor fly head-on, Steve and Peter talk about their roles. Cap lets Spidey know that they are going to save civilians.

Meanwhile, Bruce transforms into Hulk and throws himself into battle. With Natasha saving a civilian, Black Panther analyzes the beast’s species. The heroes continue fighting off the monster and/or saving people in the city. They then discover that the Biomechanoids gets more powerful with energy thrown at it. Cap asks for someone to assist Hulk. Black Widow and Spider-Man swing to it to save Hulk, now turning back into Bruce.

T’Challa then decides to allow himself to be eaten by the enemy. He wants to see if it can stomach vibranium. Thor then comes in and breaks off one of the head’s jaw. There is little movement from the monster, as Carol hopes the thing dies. They want to ensure the T’Challa is still breathing. The creature dies with Thor gloating and Black Panther is saved. He then stands up showing the team that he retrieved a piece of tech. Finally, he explains that the monster’s weakness to vibranium theory was right.

A week later, the team meets at Avengers Mountain. They are reviewing the tech T’Challa recovered and try to find its origins. With ideas being shared, they believe that there are more Biomechanoids. T’Challa, who is now injured tells his team that he and Tony made Force Multipliers for each of them. The team attaches the devices to their wrists and activate them.

Tony then leads them to a huge area containing the mech suits. After Carol asks how Black Panther and Iron Man built them so quickly, he answered with the creature’s response units. He informs them that the machines have their abilities, are made of vibranium, and they should be fine. Tony lowkey shows off and the team assembles. The issue ends with the heroes heading into battle with their tech. However, we also a glimpse of places like Birmingham, Montreal, and Kiev. These are targets for the creatures.

Jed MacKay did a nice job here. It wasn’t anything special but not bad. It was readable and it made sense. I liked the dialogue between Spider-Man and anyone else he was talking to. Also, everyone actually doing something felt good too. This is especially true for Black Panther, who I felt was the MVP of the story. His boldness will lead the team to discover something big. This is obviously going to be expanded upon in the future. This was a good start to the storyline.

As for the art, it was great! Carlos Magno’s and Guru-eFX’s work was a sight that everyone should view. First off, the detail was shown off perfectly. Next, you had panels that screamed for attention like a newborn. The shot of Captain Marvel was beautiful, along with her partners at her side!

Bruce’s switch from himself to Hulk was awesome too! I cannot forget about Thor’s single panel and how that was executed very well!!! Finally, the shot of the Avengers in their mech suits was spectacular!!!! However, I have a small grip on that specific photo. I do not like how Black Widow is cut of the page. I felt as if that double-panel should have been just one page. They could’ve had all the heroes in one shot.
