REVIEW: THOR #1

THOR

Thor is back with a new series helmed by the renowned Donny Cates, who has been hitting everything thrown his way out of the park; and Thor is no exception. Cates is joined by artist Nic Klein, colorist Matt Wilson, cover artist Oliver Copiel, and letterer Joe Sabino to bring together the Devourer of Worlds Galactus, his Heralds and newly crowned God-King, Thor.

THOR

It’s been quite some time since I read a Thor comic where I was fully captivated by the world of Asgard, and the combination of work between Nic Klein and Matt Wilson did just that. Throw me into the world of Asgard and took me for a joyride atop Mjörnil and along the Rainbow Bridge, both literally and figuratively. Donny Cates has cemented his name in the Marvel Universe by taking both renowned and obscure Marvel characters and taking them places they have never been before. Cates truly understands Thor and how the God of Thunder should be approached and treated once you get your hands on him. It’s a job well done and it’s only the very first issue.

**MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD**

As the newly crowned God-King of Asgard, Thor Odinson is now “retired”. Finding it hard to leave his life of smiting behind, and fully embracing his new role as a King. As he prepares himself for his first speech as king, things come to a halt, as the Devourer of Worlds, Galactus drops down on his doorstep, causing a wave of destruction and death.

THOR

Galactus is not here as an enemy. He needs Thor’s help…to stop The Black Winter. A meeting is held between Thor and all of Galacatus’ Heralds as they try to formulate a plan on how to save Galactus, as he is needed to stop The Black Winter. Galactus then reveals that he has seen how he meets his end, and at the end of his end is the God of Thunder himself, Thor. To bide his time, Galactus takes this opportunity to turn Thor into one of his personal Heralds to aid him in stopping The Black Winter. It’s a THUNDEROUS new perspective on the God of Thunder, and I can’t wait to see where Donny takes Thor during this series!

If there are any Marvel Comics that you MUST have on your pull-list this week, this one should be at the very top! You don’t want to miss it!
