King in Black: Symbiote Spider-Man #3 Review

Spider-Man, Rocket, Kang the Conquerer, Captain Marvel, and Black Knight must retrieve the one item that will stop Knull! However, Peter and the Captain are against working with Kang.

Spider-Man teams up with Black Knight to take on Mister E. The villain was responsible for using his shadow demons to corrupt innocent people. One of which was Ben Leeds, Peter’s friend, and co-worker. He would remove the creature from Leeds. However, this left the knight to be allowed with Merlin. The magician was actually Mister E, who ended up stabbing the knight. He would take the sword, fearing that it would kill the King of Symbiote, Knull.

The Wall-Crawler is making his return to Avengers Mansion. He is talking to himself about how today was supposed to be a cakewalk. Of course, as we know it wasn’t. He then sees a prototype of a Quinjet in the air. It was introduced by Tony Stark and is called the Wayfarer. He goes to investigate and is then met by Mister E. He is dizzy and free-falling, but lands in another jet that saves him.

He is then woken up by Kang. Spider-Man kicks the conqueror as Rocket pilots the ship. Kang sends a blast the Spidey dodges. Peter then webs the villain’s face. The fight continues with Spider-Man on top. Kang uses his force field to block more attacks. Rocket then breaks up the fight.

Rocket yells at the pair and sarcastically calls “humans the smartest creatures.” Peter is confused that he is talking with a raccoon. He then is shocked to hear the Rocket is working with him. Kang yells that they are on the same side. He proves this by showing Black Knight healing in a capsule and explaining what happened to him.

Kang then points to another capsule holding someone corrupted by one of the demons. The conqueror then threatens to throw it in the sun. He does this and the person who was once corrupted is now free. This person was Monica Rambeau, otherwise known as Captain Marvel. She is dased and confused. When she is alert, she sees Kang. Rambeau attempts to take down the villain, but Rocket stops her. Rocket then asks what a Raccoon is, Peter tells him and Rocket is not happy.

Minutes after the confrontation, Rambeau and Parker talk about the demons and the sword. Kang interrupts and tells the pair Black Knight’s sword is needed to defeat E and Knull. However, the heroes don’t trust him and think he just wants to rule the world. Rocket once again has to get the team to stop fighting. All of a sudden, Black Knight wakes up and tells the team about his sword’s strength. It is so strong that it can survive the sun.

Rambeau being possessed by the demon helped her find out their next plan. She discovered that the sword was located on Knowhere. Kang then adds that they have to meet up with a troll that forges weapons. As they talk, Mister E get there before them. The troll is named Ulicia and E will task her with destroying the sword.

Yet, someone else is after her. She has a brother and he is wielding a hammer. The Hulk looking creature is named Ulik. It looks as if our random team is going to have deal with Ulik first.

Peter David and Greg Land wrote a great story! It was entertaining in a comedic sense. I love the interaction between Rocket, Spider-Man, and Kang. The whole fight was the best part of the story. Even Peter explaining Rocket’s species was funny. As for art, let take a moment to appreciate the work done by Jay Leisten and Frank D’Armata. The illustrations are perfect! Spider-Man’s designs never get old. Actually, the design and detail of every character were great! The best photos go to the Spider-Man and Kang fight. Along with that, the introduction of Ulik.

Finally, it was a nice touch dedicating the issue to Mike Hobson. For those that do not know him, he was an executive president at Marvel. He aided in marketing, production, editorial, among many other jobs for the comic book company. He passed away in November 2020, aged 83. My condolences go out to his family and friends.
