Nuevo Rico Becomes The Winner of SXSW 2021 Jury Award For Animated Shorts

SXSW 2021 has come and went and with it saw the premiere of many new films including Nuevo Rico directed by Kristian Mercado Figueroa. Nuevo Rico has won this year’s Jury Award for Anime Shorts at SXSW 2021. The film centers around a brother and sister who stumble across a celestial secret that changes their lives for the better and ultimately the worst.

Incorporating aspects of Taino Culture and the island of Puerto Rico’s reggaeton influences, Nuevo Rico aimed to usher in a huge stepping stone on the road that is being paved for proper representation of the Latino community in mainstream media. Whether you’re part of the Latino community or are on the outside looking in wandering into the world of indigenous and Latino culture as a whole, Nuevo Rico provides that much-needed stepping stone on that road of entertainment and educational interests.
