THE FLASH SOLO FILM LANDS NEW RELEASE DATE

THE FLASH

The Flash might just get out of the speed-force after all! Warner Bros. has officially given The Flash solo film yet another release date. With It/It: Chapter 2 director Andy Muschietti attached to the project, the film will now arrive in theaters on July 1, 2022. As of now, Ezra Miller is still slated to play Barry Allen/The Flash.

THE FLASH

As many fans might know, The Flash has been silently and publically delayed on several occasions. The Flash was initially set to release a few months after the release of Justice League (2017), in April 2018, unfortunately, that film did not see the light of day. Outside of these aforementioned setbacks. Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The LEGO Movie) wrote a treatment for the film. Seth Grahame-Smith then replaced Lord and Miller to rewrite the story and direct the film in what was slated to be his directorial debut.

Rick Famuyiwa then replaced Seth Grahame-Smith to make script revisions and direct the film. Unfortunately for Famuyiwa, he and WB parted ways over “creative differences”. Joby Harold was later brought in to do a one-page rewrite of the film and that eventually turned the film into an adaption of Geoff John’s now-iconic Flash storyline, Flashpoint. Dan Mazeau (Wrath of the Titans) contributed to Harold’s script.

John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein (Spider-Man: Homecoming) were next in line to write and direct The Flash solo film, but the duo and the movie studio eventually parted ways over creative differences as well. Joining the already extensive list of screenwriters and directors entering and leaving the project, was comic book writer Grant Morrisson and the star of the film himself, Ezra Miller. Grant and Miller took a crack at writing a script for the film with a darker take. Those plans have since slipped through the cracks.

As of the writing of this article, the script is now in the hands of Cristina Hodson, who wrote the Transformers spin-off film, Bumblebee and as of recently, has written the script for the upcoming Birds of Prey film. Hodson has also written a script for the long-awaited Batgirl solo film.

As you can see, The Flash has been in limbo for quite some time, which has turned some fans away from the film. Other fans are still anxiously waiting for the first-ever Flash solo film to hit the silver screen. For now, those fans will have to wait until July 2022, as production is aiming to begin pre-production in January.
