Superman and Lois Season 3 Episode 2 Review The Nerdy Basement

Superman and Lois Season 2, Episode 3 – The Thing in the Mines (Recap/Review)

**THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR SUPERMAN AND LOIS EPISODE 203**

Superman and Lois give us a lot of mending, lots of exploding, and an unexpected appearance in its latest episode. Clark’s visions have gotten worse, much worse. He’s starting to see that whatever is inside the mines is starting to break out. To make things even worse is the timing of his visions. During separate heated arguments between Jonathan and Jordan, Clark nearly uses his heat vision towards them, nearly losing control. This nearly causes Superman and Clark to nearly collide together.

Trouble continues to trickle down the family as Jordan wants to reveal his secret to Sarah, which could potentially result in horrible consequences. Jonathan gets into a fight with Timmy Ryan about Candice giving him crystals, which is later revealed that Candice was selling them to help pay bills at her home. After the events involving Tal-Rho in the first season, the residents are in doubt for Lana, who remains hopeful as she continues her campaign. Lois calls her father Sam to resolve an issue involving her sister, Lucy. Meanwhile, Sam tells Clark that he’s going to have put aside differences with General Anderson, that way they successfully work together.

Additionally, Sam pulls a few strings and gets John into the Schuster Mines, while being very hesitant to contact Lucy after she nearly lost her life while being attached to Ally Alston’s cult. Following a detonation by Dr. Faulkner, the mysterious being emerges from the mines and begins to wreak havoc on the soldiers watching over the mines. Superman arrives after seeing that soldiers’ attacks have no effect on the being. After tussling and losing the upper hand against the being, John Henry arrives in his Steel suit to help out. John dishes out little damage to the being and only damages his helmet, which reveals part of his face.

Superman’s visions return and are increasingly bad, at the same time, the being has the same visions and flees. After the short-lived battle, Natalie confronts John about breaking his promise to her. John informs her that he’s here to help Superman and that their new lives are now their normal lives. Natalie conforms and helps him repair his damaged suit. Later on, the mysterious being removes his armor and reveals himself to be a deformed, bizarre version of Superman with a reversed “S” on his chest, comic book readers will know this version of Superman as the half-cooked clone, Bizarro.

This episode was all about mending relationships and it couldn’t have been better in its execution. What makes it better is that EVERYONE had some mending to do from Clark to John Henry. The importance of it is so great and very necessary to the overall story. Once again in this season, it gives everyone the opportunity to be active in all of the different plotlines from Clark losing his cool and nearly attacking his sons, to John, Sam, and Lois investigating the mines.

Obviously, the main plotline and the one that was a personal captivator was Clark’s. Seeing his visions take a toll on him the way that they do gives us the chance to see when Superman and Clark come close to coinciding at the same time. To elaborate, seeing Clark use the abilities of Superman in public, or out of the suit wouldn’t be the greatest thing to see if you’re related to him. As a viewer, it definitely puts you in the mindset of Jonathan or Jordan when you’re arguing with your super-dad and his eyes start to light up when he’s yelling at you. “Scary”.

By this episode, you also start to really fear for the visions that Clark is having because now he’s collapsing and it seems as if he’s acting out what he’s seeing at times. The next plot point was Jordan’s. He’s entered the same mental/emotional phase that I think almost every superhero had when a loved one was involved.

Jordan just knew that he loved Sarah and that they’d be together forever, so it’d only make sense that she ought to know that he has superpowers. Because he’s young and still naive to the consequences that can occur, Clark advises him to wait it out until he’s sure that this is what he wants. The theme that plays into that plotline is so popular in the superhero community because as a superhero, you can’t tell ANYONE that in your spare time, you’re a guy flying around with powers, and if you do, you just might put people in grave danger.

It can be appreciated that while Jordan isn’t a full-blown superhero, he is able to learn this lesson early. The pacing in this episode was great! What made it great was that, while it had a lot to cover, it still allowed certain events to marinate and to take its time without the rush. Sometimes you can’t help but praise the pacing, because the pacing always helps. Now, for the big reveal! Nope, it wasn’t who we thought it would be and some of you may be disappointed.

The thing in the mines was in fact, Bizarro. While he wasn’t named, it’s safe to say based on his appearance that this is the case. We were all thinking, “Doomsday?! They’re actually going to do the death of Superman!” Thankfully that’s not the case because…do we really want to see Superman die…again? Yet another great episode for Superman and Lois Season 2.
