The Flash Enemy At The Gates The Nerdy Basement

The Flash Season 7, Episode 15 – Enemy at the Gates (Recap/Review)

This week’s episode of The Flash was overall decent but definitely had its moments and was a step up from the previous episode.

In this week’s episode of The Flash, we see the return of Godspeed as Barry battles a multitude of Godspeeds this time around. Versions of Godspeed have been seen throughout The Flash but the viewers have never really met the “real” Godspeed, which will presumably be as powerful as his comic book counterpart or at least much more powerful than the version’s we’ve seen so far. Godspeed has never been a real main storyline in the show but he has been a slow-progressing story in the background of the show. Unfortunately, it seems like for now that will continue to be the case for the time being.

The episode starts with Barry having a dream of his daughter Nora telling him that everything works out in the end and that she loved him. Barry woke up and believed that this was a sign that Iris was pregnant with a baby girl. It is always lazy writing whenever a dream is a cause for predicting the future, but the show makes it fun. Barry is very set on finding out if Iris is pregnant or not while trying to make sure not to tell anyone. Before Cecile can find out about the news from Barry, three versions of Godspeed attack.

Barry is able to escape and slides right under a closing forcefield to keep the God Speeds out of S.T.A.R. Labs. They are able to get in eventually using some force beam from inside their chest. After they get in there is a small battle between Team Flash and the group of Godspeeds. Eventually, Barry runs away and the Godspeeds are able to surround him and keep him on the ground with their chest force blast. This was defiantly a weird thing to see in the show and was one of the low points. In the show, they have established what speedsters can and can’t do.

Of course, some new things added, but the chest blast felt very unneeded considering they already have the vortex from the arm spinning that looks and acts very similar if not the exact same. Although it was very weird to see that scene shortly after the best scene took place. The viewer sees that more Godspeeds arrive and instead of joining the other Godspeeds they attack them saving Barry. Barry doesn’t think they were there to save him but more there to kill the other Godspeeds, either way, it was a fun twist that was unexpected.

It gives this slow-burned Godspeed storyline some more questions and layers. Maybe Godspeed is not just a generic speedster villain the show has made him seem like so far. Barry finally runs his test to find out if Iris is actually pregnant and it comes out negative. Barry was devastated. Although I’m sure we will see more of Nora in the near future. Also in this episode Ultraviolet recovered her voice from Caitlyn and Cecile.

This was a subplot that was briefly shown but they did say that blackhole made it so her body would reject treatment but Cecile was able to override that by putting all the faith and love in her that her sister has for her. The show ended with Joe and Kramer’s storyline. Again this storyline is barely given any time in this episode. This storyline might have gotten 1-2 minutes the entire episode. Basically, it was just Joe and Kramer staking out a suspicious area trying to get more information on the case files. After a few moments, they were able to dodge an explosion that must have been a trap just in time.

Overall this episode still has some lazy writing issues but it does have its moments. The chest beam was obviously very silly but the reveal of Godspeeds fighting Godspeeds shortly after was a really fun twist that does give the fans something exciting to look forward to. The main problem with this episode was the lack of Joe. His storyline was extremely short and went basically nowhere. All it did was show what he was doing was dangerous. The show is in an awkward stage right now with members of the cast leaving and Joe would help with that.

Especially with the fans who have been following the show since day one. That being said The Flash has been known to be very relaxed if the actors need some time off for the most part so this might have nothing to do with writing. Of course, Grant Gustin has to be in almost every episode but fans have been seeing less and less of Joe in the later seasons and that is probably the reason. For example, the past two episodes have failed to show Iris and this could be for a variety of reasons.

It’s understandable because the time commitment to the show must be massive but still, the point stands. Joe often plays from the viewer’s point of view in the show and incorporating him more again would help a lot. He doesn’t have powers or some in-depth understanding of astrophysics, he’s just a regular guy who normally asks the questions that the viewer is already thinking. This episode does seem like it will provide more answers on Godspeed which will be exciting to watch and for some fans it might be the most excited they have been in a while.
